Company's South African branch unexpectedly receives $1,800 donation, manager uses it to create a successful staff micro-loan fund, only for head office to shut it down, demanding the money's return: 'Widely regarded as incredibly helpful'

International companies can be complicated due to the number of layers that make up their communication networks. Branch rules can differ based on locations, resources, and even based on the employees themselves. However…most what-if situations have a basic protocol that employees are required to follow…Except for this unique case, which seems to have come with no instruction manual. 

This international organization has branches worldwide, but one day, the branch in South Africa was randomly gifted $1800 in donations from an impressed donor. So the first thing this responsible manager did was disclose the donations to all the needed-to-know management team and the boss overseas, awaiting their direction on what the money should be used for. But after weeks of no responses, this employee decided to take matters into their own hands. Instead of having a pile of money sitting around, this employee decided to start a staff micro-loan fund to help employees with their personal, temporary payments if needed, under the agreement that their small portions are repaid within 3 months. A system that added a lot of support and security to their work community! 

However, when the previously silent bosses sitting in their big, international offices caught wind of the news, they instantly shut it down, demanding the money be immediately refunded. Resulting in a new (and old) working environment that left employees feeling helpless in times of need…

  • A medical emergency, the car broke down etc. This went on for about a year, until Finance decided these figures were a discrepancy and we had to put a stop to this.

  • digiorno Just fyi: These micro loans are typically called "advances" since you were taking it out of their future pay checks. So if you want to look up other ways that people have set up this sort of system you might want to use that term.
